比普通蚊子大3倍 美國颶風災區怪獸巨蚊肆虐
先前遭颶風蹂躪的北卡羅來納州現又面臨新災情－數以百萬計飢腸轆轆的巨蚊，有些體型甚至比普通蚊子大3倍。
紐約郵報（New York Post）報導，蚊子在積水中下蛋，而先前遭佛羅倫斯颶風（Hurricane Florence）侵襲的北卡，現在積水的地方一大堆。
居民菲力普斯（Robert Phillips）說：「就像災難科幻電影，這些蚊子朝我猛撲，有隻就停在我身上，牠像隻小黑鳥，我跟我老婆說『天吶，看看這東西的體型』，我說若再有更大隻的來，我就要拿霰彈槍來對付牠們了。」
婦人瓦朵斯基（Cassie Vadovsky）帶著4歲的孩子回家時，躲這些嗜血且帶斑紋的飛蟲攻擊。育有2個小孩的她說：「牠們像一陣飛雪－下蚊子的雪，我想我的車令牠們騷動，我等到牠們稍平靜後，才敢抓著孩子衝進家門。」
「我住的地方還不是城鎮裡水患最嚴重之處，難以想像蚊子如何在水患最嚴重地方肆虐。」
北卡州立大學昆蟲學家瓦德佛格（Michael Waldvogel）表示，瓦朵斯基所指的這些蚊子稱為巨蚊（Gallinippers）或美洲大蚊（Psorophora ciliata），體型能比一般蚊子大3倍。
北卡州立大學另一昆蟲學家芮斯金（Michael Reiskind）表示，這種巨蚊能咬穿2層衣服，不過他說民眾不需過分驚慌，「一隻巨蚊不會比較小的蚊子更危險，牠們既非輻射污染變大，也非基因修改而來或外來物種，不過就是颶風侵襲後會發生的現象」。
